Google Business Profile categories are the labels that tell Google what your business is, and your primary category decides which searches your listing is even eligible for. For the 3 trades on this page the primary is simple: HVAC contractor, Plumber, Electrician. The work is in the additional categories, the traps that file you under retail, and the category names contractors keep hunting for that do not exist.
Many of the contractor profiles I audit are filed under the wrong primary category or a supplier category that describes a store. The owner never notices, because the profile still shows up when you search the company name. It just stops showing up for "AC repair near me", which is the only search that pays.
This is the exact list of Google Business Profile categories for HVAC, plumbing and electrical companies in the US, trade by trade, with the names spelled the way Google spells them. It is the detail layer under Local SEO for Contractors, where categories are 1 of the 3 inputs you control this week.

What a Google Business Profile category does, in 1 minute
Google ranks the map pack on relevance, distance and prominence. Your category is the biggest relevance input you control. Google's own help page says to pick 1 primary category that describes your whole business, add a few additional categories for distinct services or departments, and not to add a category for every product or service you offer. BrightLocal calls the primary category the single most important local ranking factor, and in my audits the primary is the field most often wrong.
The picker allows 1 primary and up to 9 additional categories. There are about 4,000 to choose from, and Google adds, renames and removes some every year. The category also decides which features your profile gets, and Google warns that changing a category can trigger re-verification. Keep those 3 facts in mind and the rest of this page is easy.
The exact HVAC categories
Primary for almost every HVAC company: HVAC contractor. It matches heating and cooling queries all year. A company that only does cooling in Phoenix can argue for Air conditioning contractor, but the moment you touch a furnace or a heat pump, HVAC contractor is the correct primary and the broader match.
| Category (exact name) | Status in the US list | Use it as | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| HVAC contractor | Exists | Primary | You do heating and cooling |
| Air conditioning contractor | Exists | Additional (primary only if cooling-only) | Installs and replacements |
| Air conditioning repair service | Exists | Additional | Repair calls are a real share of jobs |
| Heating contractor | Exists | Additional | Furnace, boiler or heat pump work |
| Furnace repair service | Exists | Additional | Markets with a real heating season |
| Air duct cleaning service | Exists | Additional | Only if you sell duct cleaning as a service |
| Mechanical contractor | Exists | Additional | Commercial and light industrial work |
| Sheet metal contractor | Exists | Additional | You fabricate ductwork |
| Insulation contractor | Exists | Additional | Attic and duct insulation is a line item |
| Boiler supplier, Heating equipment supplier, Air conditioning system supplier, Furnace parts supplier, Air conditioning store | Exist | Trap | These describe sellers. Never a primary for an installer |
| Indoor air quality service | Does not exist | Nothing | Put IAQ work in your services list |
| Heat pump contractor, Thermostat installation, Commercial refrigeration | Do not exist | Nothing | Services list. Only Commercial refrigerator supplier exists, and it is retail |
A Phoenix HVAC company doing 60% cooling repair, 25% replacements and 15% heating: primary HVAC contractor, additionals Air conditioning repair service, Air conditioning contractor, Heating contractor. 4 categories total. That is the whole setup.
The exact plumbing categories
Primary: Plumber. Not Drainage service, not Hot water system supplier, not Contractor. Plumber is the category Google matches to "plumber near me", "emergency plumber" and "plumbing repair", which is where the calls come from.
| Category (exact name) | Status in the US list | Use it as | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumber | Exists | Primary | Always, for a plumbing company |
| Drainage service | Exists | Additional | Drain cleaning and sewer work are a real share |
| Septic system service | Exists | Additional | You pump, repair or install septic |
| Gas installation service | Exists | Additional | Gas lines, licensed |
| Gasfitter | Exists | Additional | Same work, second label. Pick 1 of the 2 |
| Bathroom remodeler, Kitchen remodeler | Exist | Additional | You do full remodels, not just fixtures |
| Excavating contractor | Exists | Additional | You dig for sewer line replacement |
| Water treatment supplier, Water softening equipment supplier, Water filter supplier, Water purification company | Exist | Additional, with care | Only if you sell and install systems. These read as sellers |
| Hot water system supplier, Plumbing supply store | Exist | Trap | Retail labels. Never a primary for a plumber |
| Water heater repair service, Water heater installation service | Do not exist | Nothing | There is no water heater category. The work goes in your services list under Plumber |
| Emergency plumber, Sewer line repair, Backflow prevention | Do not exist | Nothing | Services list, and the 24/7 hours attribute for emergency |
Water heaters are the most common question I get, so here it is plainly: there is no water heater category in the US list. Plumbers who pick Hot water system supplier to cover it have filed themselves under retail. Put "Water heater repair" and "Tankless water heater installation" in the services list under Plumber instead. That is what Google reads for those queries.
The exact electrical categories
Primary: Electrician. Electrical installation service exists and is tempting, but Electrician is the label homeowners search and the one Google matches for "electrician near me" and "electrical repair".
| Category (exact name) | Status in the US list | Use it as | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrician | Exists | Primary | Always, for an electrical contractor |
| Electrical installation service | Exists | Additional | Panels, rewires, new construction |
| Electrical repair shop | Exists | Additional, with care | It reads as a shop you bring things to. Skip it unless you have a counter |
| Electric vehicle charging station contractor | Exists | Additional | You install home or commercial chargers. This is the fastest-growing lane in the trade |
| Lighting contractor, Landscape lighting designer | Exist | Additional | Lighting design and outdoor lighting are sold as services |
| Home automation company, Security system installation service | Exist | Additional | Smart home and security are real lines |
| Solar energy system service, Solar energy company | Exist | Additional | You install or service solar |
| Electric generator shop | Exists | Trap | A shop that sells generators. Installers put "Generator installation" in services |
| Electrical engineer, Electrical supply store, Electrical equipment supplier | Exist | Trap | Not a contractor. Not a primary |
| EV charger installer, Generator installation, Panel upgrade service | Do not exist | Nothing | EV work has the long name above. The rest goes in services |
A Dallas-Fort Worth electrician doing panels, EV chargers and lighting: primary Electrician, additionals Electrical installation service, Electric vehicle charging station contractor, Lighting contractor. Generator work goes in the services list, not in a shop category.
The decision table: best-paying job, primary, first 3 additionals
Pick the row that matches the job you most want the phone to ring for, and you have your Google Business Profile categories in 1 line. The primary is the trade. The additionals follow the money.
| Your best-paying job | Primary | First 3 additionals |
|---|---|---|
| AC replacement | HVAC contractor | Air conditioning contractor, Air conditioning repair service, Heating contractor |
| Furnace and heat pump work | HVAC contractor | Heating contractor, Furnace repair service, Air conditioning contractor |
| Commercial HVAC | HVAC contractor | Mechanical contractor, Sheet metal contractor, Air conditioning contractor |
| Repipes and water heaters | Plumber | Gas installation service, Drainage service, Bathroom remodeler |
| Drain and sewer | Plumber | Drainage service, Excavating contractor, Septic system service |
| Septic | Plumber (or Septic system service if that is the whole business) | Septic system service, Drainage service, Excavating contractor |
| Panels and rewires | Electrician | Electrical installation service, Lighting contractor, Electric vehicle charging station contractor |
| EV chargers | Electrician | Electric vehicle charging station contractor, Electrical installation service, Solar energy system service |
| Lighting and smart home | Electrician | Lighting contractor, Landscape lighting designer, Home automation company |
Categories versus the services list
Categories describe the business. The services list describes the jobs. Owners get into trouble when they try to make categories do the services list's work, hunting for a water heater category that does not exist or stacking 9 additionals to cover every job type. Google says not to do that, and in practice the extra categories blur the signal for the queries you care about.
3 examples. Water heater repair: services list under Plumber, not a category. Emergency calls: services list plus the 24/7 hours attribute, because there is no emergency category in any trade. Maintenance plans: a service named "HVAC maintenance plan" with a price range, under HVAC contractor. The services list is read for relevance too, so the words you use there should be the words homeowners type: "AC repair", "Drain cleaning", "Panel upgrade", not internal job codes.
Multi-trade companies: 1 primary, not 3
An HVAC and plumbing company under 1 name, 1 phone and 1 license gets 1 profile and 1 primary. The primary goes to the trade that pays your best jobs, usually HVAC in the Sun Belt, and the second trade becomes additionals: Plumber, Drainage service. You lose a little on "plumber near me" and win on everything else, because a split primary is worse than a clear one.
A second profile is legitimate only when the second trade is a separate legal entity with its own name, phone number and address or service area. Creating a second "plumbing" profile for the same business from the same shop is the fastest route to a suspension, and a suspended profile produces 0 calls while you wait for reinstatement.
How to see what the top 3 in your map pack chose
Google shows a listing's primary category under the business name on Maps. Search your trade plus "near me" from a suburb you want more work from, open each of the 3 pack results, and read the label. If all 3 say HVAC contractor and you say Air conditioning contractor, you have found your first fix.
Additional categories are hidden from the public. Grid tools such as Local Falcon or BrightLocal show them for the listings in your area, and that is the most useful small subscription you will buy on this topic. If a competitor with fewer reviews outranks you in a suburb, compare primaries first, additionals second, and distance third, the same order the pillar uses for the map pack as a whole.
How to change your primary category without losing calls
- Pull your job mix for the last 12 months. Count invoices by service, not revenue by truck. The service with the most profitable jobs picks your primary. For most companies on this page the answer is the trade name, and the exercise is really about the additionals.
- Write down the current categories before you touch anything. Screenshot the profile's category section and note your calls and website clicks from the Performance report for the last 30 days. That is your baseline.
- Change the primary on a Monday morning, outside peak season. Google says a category change can trigger re-verification. A re-verification in July for an HVAC company or in January for a furnace market costs real calls. Spring or fall is the window.
- Trim additionals to the ones you do real work in. 3 to 5 total categories beats 10. Remove supplier, store and manufacturer labels unless you are one.
- Re-check the grid and the Performance report at day 14 and day 30. Calls and direction requests should hold or rise. If they fall and the grid shows you dropped out of the pack for your main query, revert to the previous primary and re-check in another 14 days. Keep the screenshot from step 2.
Match the category to your website schema
Your website should tell Google the same thing your profile does. The LocalBusiness schema type on your homepage and service pages should mirror your primary: HVACBusiness for HVAC contractor, Plumber for Plumber, Electrician for Electrician. Same name, same phone, same hours as the profile. A profile that says HVAC contractor and a website that says GeneralContractor is 1 more mismatch for Google to resolve. The full example block and the order to add markup in is in Schema Markup for AI Search, and the NAP rule it depends on is in the pillar's NAP section.
6 Google Business Profile category mistakes that cost calls
1. Contractor as the primary. It matches nothing a homeowner types. File under your trade.
2. A supplier or store label as the primary. Hot water system supplier, Boiler supplier, Electric generator shop. Google reads them as retail and shows you to people who want to buy a box, not hire a crew.
3. 9 additionals for 2 real services. Google asked you not to, and the signal for your main query gets weaker with every category you add that you do not actually do.
4. Flipping the primary between summer and winter. The primary is the trade. Seasonality lives in posts, photos and the services list. Each flip risks re-verification at the worst time.
5. Keywords in the business name to make up for a weak category. "Desert Air | AC Repair Phoenix" breaks Google's guidelines and is the most common reason contractor profiles get suspended. Fix the category instead.
6. A second profile for the second trade. Same business, same phone, 2 profiles. It works until Google notices, and then both are at risk.
The verdict
Google Business Profile categories for HVAC, plumbing and electrical companies come down to 3 primaries, HVAC contractor, Plumber and Electrician, a short list of additionals that follow your best-paying jobs, and a longer list of names that either describe a store or do not exist at all. Set the primary once, pick 2 to 4 additionals you do real work in, move everything else into the services list, and leave it alone until your job mix changes.
Then go back to the full local SEO guide for contractors, because the category is 1 of 4 inputs, and the other 3 are waiting.
